SATURN ON THE MOVE - RENOVATING CANCER FROM JUNE 2003
Maggie Kerr (AAT.Dip.Couns.)

Our old friend Saturn takes between 29 to 30 years to circuit father Sun, so every 2.3 years or so he brings his enormous societal influence toward structuring and developing the next 30 year phase of the sign he is passing through. He enters Cancer on June 5th 2003 and leaves on July 17th 2005 as he then passes on into Leo. So all sorts of major re-shuffling and re-organising is about to occur on all sorts of global and economic levels, to set the tone for the years between 2003 and 2033 - so yes… this is quite a big deal on the way.

Now we need to bear in mind that he has just spent the last few years in Gemini, dancing back and forth opposite Pluto in Sagittarius, and the repercussions in terms of international outcomes have been huge. All the areas which are ruled by Gemini and Sag. are where we see the restrictive and difficult outcomes of Saturn - telecommunications, travel, airlines, religious wars… to name just a few. So the stage is set for anchoring a new set of rules in terms of geo-political structures over the next few years. As usual the best way to see the themes which will be played out over the next few years, is to go back and have a look at the last few cycles of Saturn in Cancer.

POLITICS
1915-17 Saturn in Cancer opposes the Sun in Capricorn in Australia’s horoscope. World War I extracted huge sacrifices on the fledgling nation's youth. Prime Minister Billy Hughes' zealous conscription drive led to eventual expulsion from his own Labor Party.
Saturn in Cancer conjuncts America’s Sun in Cancer. The U.S entered WW1 just as Saturn moved onto the Sun, and Woodrow Wilson proposed The League Of Nations for after the Wars end.

1944-46 The height of WW2. Australia experienced severe rationing, and the death of then Prime Minister John Curtin. In the US President Truman presided over the formation of the United Nations Assembly in 1945.

1974- 76 Australia saw the dismissal of the democratically elected Whitlam government. Each Saturn opposition Sun has challenged Australia's leadership, divided the populace, and coincided with difficult periods for the country. We will probably experience a leadership change and possibly greater international responsibility. In the US Richard Nixon was forced to resign in October 1974 as Saturn moved onto the US Sun! So the possibly of a leadership change in the US may also be on the cards. Internationally there was the Suez crisis, civil war in Lebanon, Coup in Portugal, revolt in Cyprus, final withdrawal of the US from Cambodia… to name just a few hot spots of the times.

COMMERCE AND BUSINESS During each of the previous cycles we have experienced major restructuring in financial and real estate industries. Also the half cycles each 14/15 years equate with “tops” in industrial markets. 1915, 1930, 1944, 1959, 1974 and 1989 were all retracement phases in the global corporate sector. Remember that everything is cyclical, so what goes up must come down. So don’t be afraid of this but rather learn to work with it!! Folks who see the trends ahead of time do very well in down turn markets!

CLIMATE It Seems Saturn in Cancer brings rain!! At least for Australia. 1915, 1944, 1974 were all dates which marked the end of prolonged droughts in each case! In 1974 we had the Brisbane Floods and Cyclone Tracey! We shall see!

PERSONALLY Saturn forces us to restructure our goals and ambitions, face our fears, become more responsible (or the reverse if you are the overly responsible for everybody else Cancer/Capricorn type), honour our karmic obligations… and generally to work hard! Re-orientation of “Self” (Aries) in relation to home/family (Cancer), relationships (Libra), and career (Capricorn) is the goal and outcome of Saturn moving through Cancer (these are the 4 signs on the Cardinal Cross). If you have been on the planet for a while then think back to the dates I have mentioned and you will find these themes are relevant! Saturn’s business is to “grow you up” as I say, or to force the reality of structure, order, discipline, responsibility, and the necessary commitment within us to bring about long term results. So keeping this in mind if you are Cancer, Capricorn, Aries and Libran you are in for some major restructuring over the next few years. If you are a Cancer, Scorpio or Pisces (the Water signs) then you will experience a positive developmental couple of years if you are willing to put in some time and effort!

Collectively, corporate/ business/ real estate /families and relationships will be under re-organising pressure, so we will see the financial effects of the 2002 phase really start to have impact. The best result of this can be the personal goals of many currently conventional people reflecting their desire to “do business” in a much more humanitarian and earth conscious spirit. Perhaps the work of Bono and other influential icons will begin to pay dividends…literally… as financial institutions finally allow 3rd World debt to be freed up and a more reasonable future available to the developing nations!

Generally we will see a return to “safe and sound” philosophies as people begin to recognise how inappropriate their financial priorities have been based on their desires for “things” they don’t need, can’t afford, and aren’t making them happy!! From July 2005 until September 2007 Saturn will transit Leo, during which phase we may begin to actually meet some true leaders with more Spiritual and humanistic goals and aspirations, who have been waiting to emerge from behind the scenes.
