| Jupiter Enters Libra October 2004
26 th Sept 2004 – 26 th Oct 2005 Saturn in Cancer and Leo Pluto in Sagittarius “May you live in interesting times” is an old Chinese blessing which I have always enjoyed, and it came to mind as I was researching this article and marveling at the fascinating events and developments which have occurred every 12 years each time Jupiter passed through Libra over the past 100 years. I guess I have a soft spot for Libra, the Zodiac sign inspired by Aphrodite and Athena the Goddesses who gives form to love, beauty and justice, and in a world full of tension and fear I celebrate any opportunity to speak of peace and not war! “So let us speak of peace” just about sums up what the Great Lord of positive growth and fortune would have us do, so that these “interesting times” may progress beyond the old world view once and for all! Because this particular Jupiter in Libra 2005 to come, holds great promise and has much riding on his shoulders. So let's see why.
The “Ingress” Chart OK so the first area I'll play in is the chart which is cast for the exact minute, hour and day when Jupiter enters, or ingresses, into Libra. Cast for 25 th Sept 2004 at 3 28am BST (British Summer Time) and set for Greenwich England, this tells all about what our big friend Jove may get up to over the next year. Now remember that he changes sign once a year and his is the same cycle as the Chinese Animal Zodiac system, and the areas he will stimulate and trigger for growth and positive expansion over the next year has a relationship to when he was last in Libra back in late '92 and 1993, the early 80s and late 60s and mid 50s and so on, back as far as you like. So this is how we “mundane astrologers” (mundane meaning ‘of the earth') do our thing… we go back and research the past and link the planetary cycles in with History. Fascinating!! So as you will see when you check some of the events over the past 100 years we see certain themes emerge, which we will look at in the next section.
Jupiter Joins The Sun… The Sun is in Libra every year in late September and October, so it is only every 12 years then, that Jupiter will join the Sun in its' own sign. So this is a special meeting and bestows the warmth, light and radiance of Sol with the larger will and purpose of Jupiter. In terms of the Solar Logos, or governing consciousness of our Solar System, the Sun is of course the central focus and source, thus when Jupiter brings his vibration, which is said to rule the 2nd Ray of Love Wisdom to join with the Sun, a rare and spectacular few days of growth and positivity are indicated. So Jupiter's' Ingress chart carries this feature till October 2005! Very nice… and don't we sure need it right now.
As I write this in August 2004 we are deep in the War in Iraq under the broader umbrella of the War on Terror. Both the US and Australian elections are due within the next 4 months and both conservative governments are under threat of expulsion. Saturn has been in Cancer (a once in 30 year cycle) since June 2003, and will be there until mid 2005 providing the energetic infrastructure for the fear, constraint and re-structuring we have all been experiencing in the realm of home/family/relationships/career during these times. As we feel these fears and constraints both on an interior and exterior level we gain the opportunity of identifying them and thus being able to release and/or move beyond them. Thus we are all at the mercy of our political leaders still playing out the old style attack and aggression mentality when confronted by others' ideas and ideals. Truly this is the consciousness of the “dark ages” we are currently leaving, in much the same way that the early 1000s signaled the end of the dark ages then! And some much more “conscious” body (be that person or organisation) needs to pull a very major cat out of a hat in the very near future, or things could easily escalate increasingly out of control in the Middle East. So, as Libra is the sign of the arbitrator, mediator, diplomat and counsellor, and Jupiter offers us his moral laws and ideals which provide meaning and purpose, perhaps we see here a glimmer of hope! |

The Sun is also joined by Mars within 1 degree which is very powerful. Mars is the God of War and impels conditions toward pro-activity when positive in expression, and conflict and violence when not! Mars is in the last degree of Virgo, thus linking the potential of direct action in organisations toward diplomatic solutions of conflict. It also tells us of the inherent conflict which must be resolved for this to occur. The Moon, which tells us of the “Group Soul” or collective emotional energy of the “people” (that's you and me and the rest of them) is in the sign of humanitarian and revolutionary Aquarius, and is joined by visionary, idealistic and spiritual Neptune. This signals a fresh idealism with a focus on bringing about needed changes and reforms. It also potentially links the arts (Neptune) with the sciences (Aquarius), and these two planets form positive aspect relationship with the Sun and Jupiter in Libra… so the general call here is very positive once again. Venus (which rules Libra) is in Leo offering her diplomatic good sense to inspire our leaders (Leo)…we hope!! Once again this is very promising. So call me the eternal optimist perhaps, but this chart looks very positive, but we must allow for the Mars component which can certainly imply some pretty heavy conflict within all of the positive potential. So quite a mixed bag here with “activism” an important theme brought to us by Mars.
Looking Back at Past Cycles I've included a more in-depth listing of Jupiter in Libra past cycles at the end of the article for you more detail oriented folks!! So I'll cut to the chase with a bit of an overview by focusing on the Libran events and themes which emerge:
Human Rights and Social Justice… This is the biggie when it comes to Libra, as the Spiritual intention for Libra is to bring about “right human relations” so justice, the law (yes these are meant to go together!), diplomacy and all kinds of community welfare fall under this sign influence. Venus in her rulership also bestows her urge to balance and harmonize all forms and relationships, so mediation and reconciliation are her skills. Libra is an air sign so connects us to “society” (ruled by Uranus and Aquarius) so we can expect these next 12 months to contain all of these themes and issues as a major priority in one form or another. Tricky here though, as Jupiter sometimes acts as opportunity disguised as loss and can bring to extreme focus the issues he is seeking to help us outgrow from their old expression. As I write this there is a hostage situation in Russia with 100s of children at risk if President Putin maintains his usual position when it comes to the Chechen autonomy issue. This is a great example of just what I'm talking about – we need to move beyond the old world view approach with these matters, and I'm truly inspired to think that a miracle may occur and a new attitude and diplomacy which seeks true “solutions” begins to emerge during this next phase. Also at this time diplomatic efforts are intensifying in Somalia to deal with the civil war and famine, and it was back in 1992 during the last cycle that 18 US soldiers were killed there as members of a UN peace keeping force…interesting! Within 2 months of Jupiter entering Libra both the US and Oz elections will be held. Seeing as neither economy “needs” interest rates to rise, this issue may recede in context with these much more everyday societal matters – increasingly people are beginning to actually care about what happens in our world and are gaining a fresh inspiration for social issues… environmental concerns are growing in prominence…the middle east mess is actually going to need some creative “solutions”… welfare, crime, and on it goes. By the way there are several planets in Libra for both election days, and in this humble astrologers' opinion both outcomes will involve a change of government.
When we look back we find a mixture of both positive and very negative examples of his past cycles, such as Hitler coming to power and the first concentration camps, Mao beginning his “long march” to communism, Stalin beginning his purges in Russia – all in 1933/4. Again in 1921/2 a dictator emerges as Mussolini comes to power in Italy, but this is countered by Gandhi coming onto the scene as he is imprisoned for 6 years for ‘civil disobedience' and his peaceful non-violent philosophy eventually wins out with Indian independence in 1947. In 1909/10 China abolished slavery and in the 1945/6 period the United Nations was formed, but concurrently Peron becomes dictator in Argentine – so this very mixed theme of tyranny unleashed accompanied by the drive for civil liberty is consistent here. In 1957/8 The Common Market formed and the European Community united, as did Egypt and Sudan as they form the United Arab Republic. At the same time tension built in the US over de-segregation in the Southern states and Martin Luther King grew in prominence as blacks fought for rights and US troops landed in Lebanon. Yet another mixed bag!
In 68/69 the Red Cross undertook the first really major famine relief in Biafra, Nixon was elected president in the US and signed the first non-proliferation pact with the Soviets, and the Spanish welcomed back their King after 40 years of dictatorship. In 1980/1 Lech Walesa led the Polish workers to strike, the “gang of four” went on trial in China, the Iran-Iraq war broke out, Anwar Sadat was assassinated – whoosh… quite a year indeed. And in 1992/3 we saw the LA riots, first terrorist attack on world trade center, and civil war began in Yugoslavia as the communists fell – as we can see political activism is pronounced under Jupiter in Libra timings. Perhaps I am naïve (yes say my friends and loved ones!) but my hope is that we have traveled far enough along the road of evolution to hope for a major leap up the consciousness ladder during this next phase.
Woodstock Re-visited? When Jupiter was in Virgo 1968 the world experienced the “Summer of Love” in San Francisco and a new wave of collective philosophy was unleashed. The great “peace marches” in recent history have occurred while he is in Virgo and the following sign Libra. So in 1969 the rock music festival which became an icon and a symbol for the emerging youth culture “happened”…in a small town in up-state New York called Woodstock. And nothing was the same again. Woodstock was about “peace” and it was also about music and artistic expression and all of the great characters of the time performed there; Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Santana, Bob Dylan et al. created a phenomena which has never been matched. Until now? I wonder if Bono and/or some of the other influential characters in current times will be inspired to go for it. Let's hope so or at least there is the potential for a uniting through artistry and creative mediums which has major potential over the next year to really reach the hearts and minds of our current culture and inspire us toward bettering and uplifting the “human condition”!
The Libran Arts… Great architects such as Frank Lloyd Wright and Buckminster Fuller gained prominence in past cycles, along with musicians, composers and artists who invented new forms and opened new phases – Isadora Duncan in 1910, Stravinsky in 1922, Dali in 1934, Sydney Pollack in 1946, and would you believe Madonna in 1992/3. Beautiful people also shine in these cycles; Sophia Loran was born in 1934 & Elizabeth Taylor won her Oscar for Cat on a Hot Tin Roof in 1958 as a couple of examples. Authors of note who express the urge for social conscience also do their “thing” under this influence, such as Hermann Hesse publishing Siddhartha in 1922, George Orwell and his Animal Farm in 1946, Leon Uris and Exodus in 1958. So if you are driven by a social conscience and have something to say then here comes your opportunity! It is 84 years since Jupiter in Libra coincided with Uranus in Pisces during the 1922. This launched a huge new wave of style and design which was christened “Modernism” and led to the Art Deco era by the late 20s and 1930s, and already I am seeing evidence of Deco inspiration on the catwalks! So get ready for a really significant “new wave” in style of all kinds over the next year.
The Sciences… Aeronautics is the theme here it seems and indeed as Libra is an air sign we shouldn't be surprised. And the other air sign Aquarius brings his technological prowess and design innovation to offer some of the most beautiful and popular developments in “flying things” – the Air Ships in 1933/4, the Douglas DC6 in 1946, Pan Am 707 across the Pacific and F4 Phantom in 1958 along with the establishment of NASA, as both the US and Russia launched rockets, Boeing 747, and of course the Apollo 11 mission to the Moon on July 16 th 1969. In 1981 Regan began to hugely expand the US military and was also nearly assassinated, and fired the air traffic controllers! So it makes sense that we may expect a new wave of aeronautic technologies to come on stream this time! After all planes link up people and allow for freedom of travel and movement – all very “air” type activities.
Business… Corporate activity is pronounced in Libra and we see examples such as the formation of the Rockefeller Foundation in 1910 at the height of the new capitalist financial empire era, the UN World Bank formed in 1946, and a stock market boom in 1933/4 after the Great Depression. With Saturn in Cancer as well during this current cycle we may expect to see changing values and a new phase or wave of business culture begin to emerge. Dealing with 3 rd world debt and so on may be features at this time. We all know that business and politics are an integral relationship, and perhaps certain “trade practices” will begin to be brought to account quite soon.
The United Nations chart … The U.N. chart is very interesting over the next 12 months, and as we speak Saturn is beginning a 12 month process to re-structure this organisation as it is experiencing the second “Saturn return” to its' incorporation chart (24.10.1945 4.45pm Washington USA) – so 60 years later it is in for a major overhaul!! The UN chart also has 4 planets in Libra including Jupiter, (as you would expect!!) and thus Jupiter is also returning to his natal position initiating a new 12 year phase. The final cook stirring the pot is Pluto who will oppose his natal position during the next 12 months, signally the “death/rebirth” of this organism. It will be truly interesting to see what unfolds here and who emerges out of the debris to carry us forward into a new and more empowered phase from here. |

In Conclusion… Here's to healing and clearing any old unresolved relationships we may have in our own lives, so we can join in a renewed spirit of co-operation and resolution from here. It's time to have a social conscience and be willing to fight for things we believe are important, but perhaps fight is not the right word anymore, as what is really needed is the release of anger and frustration at others and their ideas and ideals if they are different from ours, and a simple acceptance and allowing which leads to tolerant outcomes!! New relationships will form in our lives which bring us many opportunities, and they will help us reach out into our own brighter futures…freshly inspired. Good luck!!
