Re-structuring Our Egos - Saturn in Leo July 200550 years ago a generation of people began a revolution, and another great evolutionary leap in the human story was launched. It's hard to gain perspective on the coming Saturn in Leo phase without hooking into this history. And a few other notable pieces of history for that matter…as we shall see.
So what's about to “happen” between 17 th July 2005 and 3 rd September 2007 as our “Great Lord of Matter” does his thing in the legend making sign of Leo? Firstly to those just opening the door to the remarkable world of Astrology I'll offer a few basics.
As I said these are just the basics! So on with the show says Leo, who is of course famous and synonymous with the entertainment industry. Amongst many other things.

The Story Thus Far…
Between April 1996 – October 98 as he moved through Aries a new phase in human development opened, the like of which we have never experienced before. Humanity was finally a ‘global village' connected by e-waves, financial networks and corporate industrial complexes, all of which went into full ‘attack' mode into a future as yet un-designed. Impulsiveness reigned and thoughtlessness for outcomes was rampant. The ‘new entrepreneur' was born and general rape pillage and plunder of the natural world and fellow human beings was fully acceptable.
From October 1998 – April 2001 – he sauntered through Taurus , laying open the nature of the greed function which underpins our global machine. This was also the time to review core values in the midst of a material feeding frenzy, as we were encouraged to completely surrender ourselves to the credit system, which has gone on to cripple so many in the middle and lower class West. Financial empires were built upon the desire nature of we mere mortals. The GST tax was introduced in Australia as one example of a ‘new financial' system.
Then comes April 2001 – June 2003 in Gemini , and I think it's true to say that as he began his opposition to Pluto in Sagittarius the impact of a fateful day on September 11 th 2001 changed the world, and things haven't been the same since…as they say! Both the literal and symbolic symbols of the “twin towers” are classic when associated with Saturn in Gemini! Sagittarius and Gemini are both signs connected with travel, media, communications and all things philosophical. The belief systems and religions which embody the polar split between major cultures have been front and centre in the issues since then. The seeds were sown for the next phase.
Saturn in Cancer phase began in June 2003 , and we are just completing this as I write this little report. In this past 2 years all the things that we in the “civilized” West have considered safe and sound have been challenged. The very foundation of our global security has been altered. The greatest threat to “warrior” based outcomes has been unleashed. How safe do you feel lately? Are you living in the shadow of fear? Or have you used the last few years to confront your fears and become a more emotionally secure person? This was the purpose of his sojourn in the feeling/emotion based sign of Cancer. There is a liberation contained in this outcome if you “get it”. You are now free to go beyond the “what/who do I have/own that keeps me safe” paradigm! We have been drowning in Real Estate and renovations programs on “cable” TV (doesn't everyone have cable and mobiles now?), implying that a modern house and matching mortgage is going to make everything OK. Well on some levels it does. It is essential to have a loving home and family, even if it is not connected by blood. And over the past few years yours has probably been tested and restructured to enable a stronger entity to emerge. Relationships which were based on insecure foundations have moved on, kids who needed to leave home have left (yes even we guys in our 30's, 40's and 50's!) And hopefully you have learnt that you are lucky…yes it's tough sometimes but if you live in Iraq or so many other places, you haven't felt safe for a very long time.
Another important ingredient in the mix of the past few years is Chiron, the planet of crisis and healing, in the sign of Capricorn… a 50 year cycle. Capricorn is the sign which Saturn “rules”, and governs corporate enterprise and all forms of “govern-ness”. So as corporate culture has been making whoopee we have seen the exposing of the raw underbelly of greed, corruption and unaccountability. Who is responsible for our Planet anymore? Who gives a damn? Not the Fortune 500 it would seem. Chiron's action is to bring things to a crisis before the deeper healing possibilities can be undertaken… in due course.
As I'm writing this I happened to put the TV on, and low and behold the “phenomenal Universe” is as work. A documentary about Michael Moore is playing and he's visiting various cities in the US confronting CEOs of major corporations with huge profits made at the expense of US workers (because so much labor is now “offshore” in China and Asia), and other horrific malpractices. This is what the past couple of years has brought to a head. A world where politics has permeated every aspect of culture, and the piggyback system of corporate America (the true Imperialist model of current times), is racing out of control and unchecked.
Enter Saturn in Leo – 17 th July 2005 – September 2007. The tool of the Astrologer is observation of past cycles to gain insight into possible outcomes for future events. We can't say what will happen, only highlight possible arenas of development and activity. So here are the past 3 Saturn in Leo timings during last century, and I will highlight some of the events in the sections which follow.
1975 September 17 th till 26 th July 1978

Politics The sign of Leo is primarily concerned with “leadership” function. So as we enter this period it is obvious that we will do some major restructuring in our world as to the nature of leaders, leadership and the power of the individual within the countries whom they lead. When we look at the history of past eras we see a series of remarkable events reflecting the re-shaping and re-structuring of political affairs.
In the 1916-1919 period: -General Allenby takes Jerusalem as British capture Palestine - Russian revolution begins in March and Lenin returns to Russia -Bolshevik Revolution in October puts Soviets in control -German army mutinies & Kaiser abdicates. Germany is declared a republic -US enters WW1 in 1917 in time for the battle of Marne in 1918 -Massacre in Amritsar India brings young Gandhi to prominence -Woodrow Wilson re-elected president US -John F Kennedy born -US announces 14 point plan for Europe reparations -Armistice signed in Europe -Poland and Czechoslovakia declare independence -Versailles Peace conference -British Afghan war erupts -First League of Nations meeting -Mussolini founds his fascist party
In the 1946 – 49 period: - Partition between India and Pakistan - Gandhi assassinated - Verdicts at Nuremburg against Goering etc - Britain and France evacuate Lebanon - Communists take over Czechoslovakia - Chiang Kai-shek re-elected in China -Truman elected president in US -USSR closes Iron Curtain – airlift begins - Peron becomes “absolute dictator” in Argentina - Republican government in Italy - Chinese civil war resumes - Republic of Philippines declared - UN votes partition of Palestine and Israel - Burma becomes independent - Marshall plan for re-building Europe -Peace treaties signed in Paris
In the 1975-78 period: - - Begin becomes prime minister in Israel - North and South Vietnam re-united - Panama Canal returned from US to Panama - Peron overthrown in Argentina - Pol Pot appointed premier in Cambodia -Thailand's government falls in Coup - Jimmy Carter elected president in US - Mao Tse-tung dies - Human rights manifesto signed in Czech - Oil energy crisis in US - Brezhnev elected president Soviet Union – Nobel Peace Prize to Amnesty International - Franco dies and king returned in Spain -Suez Canal re-opened -The Shah in Iran imposes marshal law - Coup in Bolivia - Anwar Sadat visits Jerusalem ends 30-yr war of Israel and Egypt – Camp David - Rioting and violence in South Africa as blacks fight apartheid – first black homeland - First elections held in Pakistan under civilian rule – army Coup against Bhutto
Particularly in the 1916-19 and 1946-49 periods we see massive restructuring of global boundaries and empires. The Russian Revolution and resultant reshaping of Europe in the first instance after WWI, and the further re-organisation of Europe and Asia after the WWII during the 1946-49 period. Remembering that the opposite sign of Leo is Aquarius, which rules the politics of human affairs and collective groups, it is not surprising that such significant global matters unfold during this phase. We also witness the partition of India/Pakistan, North/South Korea, Israel/ Palestine, Indonesian independence from Holland - all occur or are forming during the 1946-49 phase. It is interesting as I scan the lists to see that Kings and Presidents come and go during this Leo phase, which fits of course. The example of Pol Pot coming to power after the fall of Cambodia and the US defeat in 1976, reminds us that not all political shifts in this cycle are necessarily of a positive nature…good to keep in mind to temper the more idealistic and sometimes less realistic scenarios we may be currently envisaging.
Let's Integrate Chiron in Aquarius This takes us back to my opening statement. 50 Years ago Chiron entered Aquarius (January 1955) and a revolution began. This was the era of the “beat” generation, Elvis, the early Beatles, Rebel without a Cause (James Dean), Marlon Brando and so many other examples of an era which opened a door for the “individual” to emerge with a sense of identity unlike previous generations. These characters embraced the urge for rebellion and change as they thumbed their noses at the conservative values of their parents' generation. It was the era of McCarthyism and “reds under the bed”, the Cold War was flourishing and J Edgar Hoover (head of the FBI) was a very powerful man. Martin Luther King came to prominence in the Civil Rights Movement in the US, which ultimately led to de-segregation of the black population.
Aquarius rules technology and scientific invention so we see the advent of television and other communication breakthroughs, rockets, nuclear power and so on. Because of its association with collective humanistic movements the ascendancy of Communism in Europe and Asia during this period also reflects the emerging ideal of a unified society without class systems. Unfortunately inherent within the 20thC communist application, this was brought about by controlling systems of governance which completely removed the right of the individual to a free will. So no I am not advocating that communism as we have witnessed it in the USSR and China worked as such, but I understand the original Marxist ideal which underpins it.
Just as a matter of interest Chiron was in Aquarius when Abraham Lincoln became President of the US, and during the American Civil War fought to free black slaves in the southern states. Also during this time Tsar Alexander II began the emancipation of serfs in Russia. A hundred years later with Chiron in Aquarius John F Kennedy became President and was fueled by an ideal to protect the people of a small Asian country named Vietnam from Communism. Here we have a great example of a dream that went terribly wrong. I can see similar parallels with the current war in Iraq, with the difference being the Iraqis did not invite the US to intervene, as was the case with the South Vietnamese government in 1961.
So what does all this mean about now? Well Chiron returned to Aquarius in February this year and contains the potential to take these themes forward another “notch”. A new wave of humanistic idealism will emerge incorporating abolition of ‘slave labour' and all forms of inequality. Quite how and where this happens of course, is a matter of observation over the next 6 years… until 2011 when Chiron then enters Pisces.
Saturn in Leo plus Chiron in Aquarius So as Saturn enters Leo in July it will oppose (be opposite) Chiron in Aquarius setting the tone for the whole 2 year period. So we see the linking of Saturn in Leo's inherent urge to re-organise geo-political structures, with Chiron in Aquarius' urge to reform and change humanity's class structures. A new wave of individuals will emerge who take up leadership roles in human rights movements, which confront the current political systems in many different ways. Conservative based governments will be challenged to become more “democratic” in the true sense, whilst honoring the role of the individual. Leaders will be made to be more accountable, as people begin to question the rights of governments to implement systems which do not foster the integrity of a humane and wholistic society.
There will be radical advances in science and technology which directly impact our individual rights as Leo rules the “individual”. So genetic testing will become commonplace and governments will be impelled to impose moral boundaries to protect the rights of individual privacy. The pace of technological advance will be fast and furious and once again “privacy” will become a feature of heated debate. I wonder if we'll be offered our own ‘micro-chip' implant in the same way that we microchip our dogs and cats. So much easier just to put your wrist under the scanner rather than have to carry around all those plastic cards. Move over “Big Brother”! No thank you!! I'm also wondering if we'll see another phase of the UFO thing…you know ET's…our extraterrestrial friends. Have we been living in a cover-up and conspiracy these past 60 years? Flying saucers were first reported in the US in 1946…when Saturn was in Leo! Sorry I couldn't resist…just for fun to get you thinking!!
As Leo also has rulership over all things and people “iconic”, entertainers and film stars will take centre stage in roles which demonstrate passionate leadership. Think back to Ronald Regan in the 50s as a film star and his later rise to the Presidency! Bob Geldorf and Bono are already making major political moves in recent times, so my call is that they (and others like them) will begin to wield enormous political pressure as they rally large groups of ‘individuals' to common causes and goals. Because that's the point now. Individuals must begin to recognise the power of shared ideals and their ability to influence the “powers that be”! The great gift of the internet offers us a vehicle for public moratorium that bypasses the established control of corporate media, which seeks to offer status quo and usually biased views to limit rather than liberate their patrons. On an everyday level we can expect to see the drama and film industry go through another phase of development, and I'd say “passionate leader” type characters will be very popular. In the same way that we've had umpteen decorator/renovation shows in the last 2 years with Saturn in Cancer, we'll now get endless “become a fabulous star” shows and such. You get the idea I'm sure!!
We need to remember that these things will not happen “overnight” as these next 2 years are “seed-planting” times and outcomes will not begin to emerge immediately. It's certainly going to be a very interesting phase and I for one am looking forward to it! |
So What Does This Mean About Each Of Us?
Good question. Lot's of things, but the keynote is creative self expression. Our western culture is by and large a rather superficial experience, where image and ego expression are viewed as valuable and therefore acceptable. But the point is that many people don't know who they really are in a true or real way, and struggle with authenticity, being a true individual and having a real relationship with joy, love, passion and all the best of what Leo has to offer us in the Zodiacal mix. So in the next 2 years your job is to find out who you really are beneath the makeup. To get beyond the small inner child that may still be seeking recognition and approval from the people around you, for validation of who you are so you can approve of yourself! Parents and children often struggle in conflict with the parent/child relationship, as the parent seeks to mould a child into their ‘creation', rather than nurture the true individual within their child. So you may need to “re-parent” yourself with positive self regard, and messages which give you freedom to explore your true potential “outside of the box”.
Leo's true purpose is to forge the “completely unimpeded self-expression whether this is an artistic field, an intellectual one, an emotional one, or the creation of a living child” Often we need to explore what is contained in our “shadow”…our unexpressed and unlived self. This is the part of us we shy away from, as often it was made ‘bad or unacceptable' when we were children. So we are in fear of these unexpressed components of our potential, and unconsciously invite others to ‘play them out' for us. We then attempt to suppress these qualities we see in others, as we secretly envy them because they are denied in ourselves. As a result we experience the very rejection of love we fear, as they do not feed us back the recognition and love we seek.
This is a classic psychological pattern, which is inherent in the human ego driven experience. And we must all work this out if we are to become a “fully realised individual” able to express the joy, passion and intensity of loving connection to our society and fellow beings. So over the next few years this is your territory my friends, and hopefully you will be inspired to take up the challenge of becoming “real”! Once you are freed from the shackles of personal insecurity then you can find your spontaneity and excitement. These are the attributes of a true leader/motivator. As a result many of you will be ready to become leaders in your chosen fields, and to shine the light of consciousness beyond your personal ego (with a small e), as you are motivated to become involved with humanity in ways which will bring you true meaning and purpose, and the reward of personal satisfaction and regard. Good stuff!!
The sign of Leo is ruled by the Sun. Psychologically the Sun represents our “potential for consciousness”. The Oxford Dictionary offers us “to be conscious – with mental faculties awake, aware, and intentional”. The word “conscience” also arises here – “a person's sense of right and wrong”. So to be in our true solar essence we just have to be all of these things. Sounds easy! Saturn's process will force each of us to examine the ways we may fear the responsibility of becoming truly aware of our intentions!
