"So these natural adventurers set off on "quests", and we see a sweet association with the animal of Sagittarius& the Horse, the Hero's friend, with whom they travel through symbolic realms in their seeking after truth. The point here is that the symbolic heroes journey ("The Quest for Consciousness"), is an inner process which is gained from outer experiences, and that it is an "heroic round" which requires that after "going out" to get the knowledge, we have to "come home to ourselves" to effect the new consciousness.
Functional Sagittarians are indeed natural teachers, and once they get over their righteousness that everyone has to believe the same thing as they do, they can be excellent adherents of moral truths, justice and wise spiritual ideals. Sag. will often preface their statements with "I believe... ". The archetype here is "The Hierophant" or "Wise Counsel to the King".
Thus we find the highly trained academic in Sagittarius also. The image of "the cap and gown" recognising tertiary education in the "professions" arises here, so when Sagittarius places commitment and discipline (Virgo) behind their vast energy we meet "The Professor" or educational specialist. Sagittarius is also the sign of the printed and published word, so careers in journalism, publishing and the media all fulfill their need to "spread the word", at the same time as expanding their horizons, and expansion is an important function within the Sagittarian experience.
Their fascination with belief systems takes them into religious areas, where they may be attracted to the more conventional major religions, and become ministers and pastors, or the more unconventional types will experiment with Eastern, Mystic or Cultish systems. Sag. will often have spent time in Ashrams and in the presence of Gurus or Spiritual Masters (Pisces Mutable Cross), where their test becomes whether they follow these beliefs with blind adherence, which can be detrimental, or whether they are able to discern (Virgo Mutable Cross) the truth from the teachings they receive, and enhance their lives in the process. Sag. sometimes fancies themselves as "the Guru", where we may witness again the grandiose type. Sag. must learn that a truly wise Guru has nothing to prove and no one to control, but is meant to lead (Leo Fire) from example.
Natural story tellers, these exciting and interesting people rarely "let the truth get in the way of a good story", and can entertain and educate at the same time, so this is why they make such good writers, along with their wisdom and knowledge they have to pass on. Prone to extremes of experience (the ruling planet Jupiter was a god of extremes) they tend to a life of ups and downs which makes for interest, sometimes drama, and creates their sense of being alive. "Lady luck" and "Fortuna" are female archetypes here which denote the lucky Sagittarian, at times reckless, prone to gambling the odds, and yet graced (Pisces) with their Angels getting them out of fixes at the last possible moment.
These are also the sporty people of the world, who because of their height (usually), strength and love of using their bodies, enjoy taking their bodies to extremes also, in their quest for excellence in their chosen sport. Unlike the Fire Arian counterparts, they are happy to compete in the spirit of "the game", and don't always have to win to prove themselves.
It's hard not to like the classic Sagittarian, and at their best these are the people who are here to enrich the planetary whole with their ability to inspire (Pisces) us all with their knowledge and wisdom, so we may all realise that without a sense of meaning and purpose, life can be an alienated experience, where excitement and a sense of adventure is lost to us. I see this evident in our Society these days, where materialism contains little opportunity for the higher attributes within its' people.

PSYCHO/EMOTIONAL PATTERNS
Sagittarians are by nature expansive, and therefore prone to overindulgence and extremism. They are essentially 'in their heads' (i.e. out of touch with their feelings), and are not often found in therapy, as they 'know everything' (they are always telling you what you need) and are "fine, thank you very much'. They are so optimistic that they are often 'unreal' and prone to 'over-riding' themselves. They don't know when to stop or when they've had enough. Therefore they are more likely to suffer from "burn-out" than anything else. If they also have a strongly placed Jupiter, they may suffer from bi-polar or manic depressive types of states. This is due to their extreme behaviour - they are either 'all on' or 'all off'. They are apt to 'do a thing to death'.
Unlike Scorpio, the previous sign, Sagittarius does not want to look too deeply into the murky parts of life. They fire their arrows high and seem to be able to overlook what is directly under their noses. In short they can be 'in denial' about a lot of 'truths' in their lives and yet it is 'the truth' which the Sagittarian strives for. This over-optimism and over-riding is not conducive to intimate relationship either& the Sagittarian has a roving eye and wants to keep his freedom.
Without wanting to kill off their wonderful questing spirit, they do need to take a serious look at themselves and their capacity for sustained effort, real honesty, and their need to release misconceptions from their belief systems. They also need to practise moderate behaviours, which allow for consistency in relationship, before any real potential for deeper intimacy may be achieved.
It is the Sagittarians' quest for knowledge, truth and meaning in life which eventually leads them to themselves and consciousness, and then they can make truly effective teachers and imparters of wisdom. Until they explore themselves and embrace their bodies and feelings as a reality, they are only mouthing platitudes and knowledge from their 'heads'.
They can learn a lot from their Gemini opposite by dealing more with the everyday world instead of preaching about what should be done on a broad scale. A true teacher or writer is one who understands him/herself, the diversity of the world and their place in it, and can graciously give others the space to find their own truth.
